Frequently asked questions
What is a neuropsychological assessment?
A neuropsychological assessment is a detailed evaluation of how your brain functions. It involves a combination of interviews, questionnaires, and standardised tasks to measure areas such as memory, attention, problem-solving, language, and emotional functioning. These assessments are used to better understand cognitive or behavioural changes and support diagnosis, treatment planning, or funding applications (such as NDIS).
Who might benefit from a neuropsychological consultation?
Neuropsychological consultations can benefit individuals across the lifespan who are experiencing cognitive, emotional, or behavioural changes. This may include children with learning or developmental difficulties, adolescents struggling with attention or mood, or adults facing challenges after brain injury, neurological illness, or mental health concerns. It’s also helpful for those seeking diagnostic clarification for conditions like ADHD, intellectual disability, acquired brain injury or dementia.
What’s the difference between counselling and neuropsychological assessment?
Counselling and neuropsychological assessment are both structured and evidence-based processes, but they serve different purposes. Counselling focuses on emotional wellbeing, helping individuals navigate life challenges, improve coping strategies, and make meaningful changes through a therapeutic relationship. Neuropsychological assessment, by contrast, is an evaluation of how a person’s brain is functioning, particularly in areas such as memory, attention, language, and problem-solving. It helps identify cognitive strengths and difficulties that may be affecting learning, behaviour, or daily functioning.
What if I’m not sure what I need?
That’s completely okay. A case consultation is offered to explore your concerns, clarify what kind of support might be most appropriate, and guide the next steps.
What are the fees for services?
Assessment fees vary depending on the complexity and type of evaluation. Neuropsychological assessments typically start from $1,600, though an initial consult is required first to better understand your needs and determine the most appropriate assessment pathway. Autism and ADHD assessments start at $1300.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate?
Medicare rebates are available for counselling sessions with a valid Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. In 2025, the standard Medicare rebates are $98.95. These rebates do not apply to neuropsychological assessments. Some private health funds may also offer partial rebates, please check with your provider.
Can I use my NDIS funding?
Yes. If you are self-managed or plan-managed, you can use NDIS funding for eligible psychological and neuropsychological services. The current hourly rate for psychology under the NDIS is $232.99. Assessments, therapy, and functional capacity reports can often be claimed depending on your plan goals and budget categories. If you're unsure how this works, feel free to get in touch for guidance.
